Modern Mondays: Mid-Century Lighting Design

Mid-century lighting design is equally as fantastic as furniture design from the same era. It expresses a bold geometric form thru simplistic line- with circular shapes dominating its shades and other bulb coverings. From floor to pendant residential lighting, mid-century lighting is still contemporary today. A few of my favorite inspirations include: brass sputnik pendant light; gorgeous Italian Lumi ceiling lamp with enamel details; French Lightolier sputnik inspired pendants; Serge Mouille minimal floor lamp; and the retro Angelo Leli floor lamp.  From pendant to ceiling to floor-lightening from the mid-century is as illuminating as ever.

Metallics: The Bold and the Beautiful

Metallics are one of my favorite mediums to decorate with. From lighting to accessories, art, and even textiles, they add warmth and intrigue. Whether you use them as the focal point of your space, or more subtly with pops spread about, you can’t go wrong. And they can be used year round. My current favorites include: the gami rose gold candleholder from cb2. Its geometric and glows when you light your tealight. Also from cb2, the liberty pendant light is an overscaled modern update of your traditional pendant lighting. With a brass interior, your room is sure to glow in its warmth. While your lounging, wrap yourself in the grey stripes moroccan wedding blanket- sequence included for some metallic sparkle. This blanket from maven collection would also be a beautiful addition to your bed. For a little mid-century geometric glam, the worlds away surf coffee table with gold leaf legs and a black marble top is a must. Love those angular legs! Lastly, I can not say metallics without mentioning Tom Dixon. Besides wanting everything, the scoop high copper legs chair will do. Whether for dining or as a side chair, comfort and modern elegance are combined in this sculptural chair. Now go add some bold and beautiful metallics to your space.

Brass is Back

Brass is back. Forget those awful brass accents and finishes from the 1990s, because brass got a modern update (hello, no more lacquer) and is here to stay. Brass accents and finishes have an understated elegance and modernist aesthetic. It is strong, won’t rust, and has been reimagined into a variety of geometric forms. Brass also adds a natural pop of warmth to any space, and is a perfect complement to textiles. I love the versatility of brass. It can be used as a singular show stopping piece like side chairs done completely in brass. Or as accents like a task lamp and side table. Whether you are sublet or bold with your brass, this precious metal is here to stay.
